The eight-day long festival falls on the Bhadra shukla chaturdashi as per Nepali calendar.
A sacred wooden pole called Lingo with flags on its top, known as ‘Indradhowjotthan' is erected at Hanuman Dhoka, which marks the beginning of the festival.
Different cultural dances including Bhakkunach, Mahakalinach, Lakhenach, Dasavatarnach and Pulukisinach are performed.
On the occasion, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari today reached the Basantapur Durbar area and attended the celebration of festival by worshiping the Living Goddess, Kumari.
She offered puja to Lord Ganesh and Lord Bhairav and also received prasad from the priest.
The ceremony was also attended by Acting Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker, chiefs of the constitutional bodies, security chiefs, representatives of diplomatic missions, and the commoners.
